3. Affirmative Action Quotas
KUCCPS reserves slots for students from marginalized regions, ASAL counties, and informal settlements. Gender balance and disability status are also considered. These slots can place students with slightly lower cluster points.

How to calculate your cluster points: Each KCSE subject grade gets a number: A=12 points, A-=11, B+=10, B=9, B-=8, C+=7, C=6, C-=5, D+=4, D=3, D-=2, E=1. Your Second Choice — First Backup

Your Third Choice — Wider Net
Consider courses in related fields or at institutions with lower cutoffs. You can still pick competitive courses, but make sure the cluster points are within reach of your score.
Remaining Degree Choices — Safety Net
Use these slots for safer options. Consider less competitive universities, newly established programmes, or courses in high demand but with moderate cutoffs. Include at least one realistic option where your cluster points clearly exceed the cutoff.
TVET Diploma/Certificate Choices
These are processed separately from degree choices. You can be placed in both a degree programme and a TVET programme. Select courses that interest you and have good employment prospects. For diploma courses, KCSE grade requirements are lower (typically C- to C+).

Common Course Selection Mistakes to Avoid
Picking courses above your cluster points
Fix: Check last year's cutoff for each course before you pick it. If your points are much lower than the cutoff, do not waste a slot on that course. Focus on courses where your points are enough.
Forgetting subject requirements
Fix: Even with high cluster points, you will not be placed if you did not take the right subjects. For example: you cannot do Engineering without Physics — even with an A in KCSE. Check the subject requirements for every course before picking it.
Putting a 'safe' course as 1st choice
Fix: Many students put an easy course first because they are scared of missing out. But if you qualify for that easy course, you get placed there — and your dream course is never even checked. Put what you really want first. Have backup choices in spots 2 to 7.
Leaving choice slots empty
Fix: You can pick up to 7 degree courses and 4 diploma courses. Use all of them. Empty slots lower your chances. Even if you are sure about your first choice, having backups costs you nothing.
Skipping diploma and certificate options
Fix: Degree courses are very competitive. If your KCSE grade is C+ or below, diploma courses give you a much better chance. Diploma graduates can later upgrade to a degree. Do not skip the TVET section of the application.
